How Design Tools Leak Your Work (Silently)
I opened Figma last week to tweak a client logo. Then I remembered: that file’s been in a shared workspace since 2022. And Figma’s default settings let any installed plugin read every layer.
Adobe Creative Cloud does the same thing. Their Terms of Use Section 4.2 says they can “analyze and improve services” using your files. That includes Generative Fill outputs.
Even if you never click “publish.”
That’s not hypothetical (I) checked the PDF myself.
Canva? It auto-saves everything to their cloud (even) when you think you’re working offline. Sketch stores local caches that sync on next launch.
Affinity Suite says it’s local-only, but its plugin manager asks for full document access.
Here’s what no one tells you: “Your content remains yours” means nothing if the license grants broad usage rights for service improvement.

I turned off Figma’s auto-sync last Tuesday. It took 12 seconds. You should too.
Disabling auto-sync in Preferences stops your layers, comments, and accidental Ctrl+Z history from phoning home. (Yes, it really does that.)
Use .afdesign files saved locally (not) cloud-linked. Affinity doesn’t nag you about it, but the cloud version does log export patterns. I checked.
Rename layers before client handoff. “Layer 1” and “Group Copy 3” are AI bait. Call them “Header-Desktop” or “CTA-Mobile”. It confuses scrapers.
And yes. It works.
Strip metadata from SVGs and PNGs with exiftool -all=. Free. Fast.
One command. Run it before every export. I keep it in a script on my desktop.
Adobe? Go to Preferences > Services and kill Adobe Sensei. Then open Libraries and disable Firefly.

Then open Creative Cloud desktop app and opt out of Improve Adobe Products. All three. Do not skip one.
In Illustrator: uncheck Preserve Editing Capabilities when exporting. In Photoshop: disable Include Metadata under File > Export > Export As. That’s where prompts and AI tags hide.
Here’s something weird that works: drop an invisible SVG comment like into your source files. Or slip in a zero-width space (U+200B) in a layer name. It won’t render.
But if it’s missing later, someone tampered.

When Offline Mode Lies to You

I shut off Wi-Fi and call it safe. You do too. We’re both wrong.
Data residue is what stays behind after you delete the file. Cached previews. Thumbnail databases.
Clipboard histories. OS-level render buffers. It’s not just “deleted.” It’s hiding in plain sight.
On macOS? Check ~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.*. Windows?
Dig into AppData\Local\Adobe\*. Linux? Look at ~/.cache/figma/.
Delete those folders. Empty trash. Reboot.
Then check again.
Here’s what no one tells you: GPU memory holds pixel traces. AI upscalers. Real-time filters.
They dump raw image data into VRAM. And that doesn’t vanish when you close the app. A forensic tool can pull it back.
I’ve seen it.
Use Console.app on Mac (filter for ‘Adobe’). Event Viewer on Windows (search ‘CloudSync’). Linux?
Run lsof -u $USER | grep -i cache. These aren’t optional. They’re your first audit.
And disabling internet access? That won’t stop local AI plugins from logging your prompts and outputs as plaintext JSON. Yes.
